Verse of the Day: 31 May 2026
The Word
Surely He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted.
- Isaiah 53:4Thoughts on Today's Verse
When the weight of our sadness feels like a mountain we cannot climb and the pain in our bodies or our hearts makes every breath feel heavy, we must remember that our burdens have already been carried by a friend who loves us more than life itself. We are never asked to walk through the dark valleys of grief or sickness alone because there is someone who has already stood in the rain for us so that we could find a place of warmth and shelter.
To bear something means to pick it up and hold the whole weight of it on your own shoulders so that someone else can stand up straight. We often think that we have to be the ones to carry all our mistakes and all our hurts like a heavy backpack full of big, jagged rocks that makes our backs ache and our legs shake. We walk through the grocery store or sit at our kitchen tables feeling the pressure of everything that is going wrong in our world. It is like trying to carry a giant bag of sand that is leaking through our fingers while we are already so tired we want to sleep for a hundred years. But this verse tells us that the work of carrying has already been done by a Savior who saw us struggling and decided to take the load for us. He looked at our sicknesses and our tired minds and He said that He would take them upon Himself so we would not have to be crushed by them. It is like a strong father who sees his little child trying to carry a heavy suitcase up a long flight of stairs and gently picks up both the suitcase and the child to carry them to the top. We are being carried even when we feel like we are the ones doing all the walking.
Our infirmities are the things that make us feel weak and broken, whether it is a cold that will not go away or a heart that feels like it has been shattered into a million tiny pieces. We live in a world where our bodies get tired and our spirits get bruised by mean words or hard times that we did not see coming. Sometimes we feel ashamed of our weakness and we try to hide it behind a smile or by staying very busy so no one sees how much we are hurting inside. But the Lord is not afraid of our broken parts and He does not turn away when we are not at our best. He took those very things—the parts of us that feel ugly or weak—and He made them His own. It is like a gardener who takes a wilted and dying plant and brings it into a warm greenhouse to give it exactly what it needs to grow strong again. We do not have to pretend to be strong because His strength is the only thing that really matters in the end. He knows the names of our pains and the reasons for our tears, and He treats us with a kindness that is softer than the softest silk.
Sorrows are like deep shadows that follow us around...
Sorrows are like deep shadows that follow us around and make the sun feel less bright than it used to be. We lose people we love or we see our dreams fade away and it feels like a heavy blanket of gray mist has settled over our lives. We wonder if we will ever feel light again or if the sadness will be our only companion for the rest of our days. This promise tells us that our sorrows have been carried by the one who is called the Man of Sorrows. He knows what it feels like to be lonely and He knows what it feels like to be betrayed by a friend or forgotten by the world. Because He carried our grief, we can find a way to breathe again even when the air feels thin and cold. It is like when a best friend sits with you on the floor while you cry and does not ask you to stop or to be happy right away, but just stays there so you are not by yourself in the dark. We have a God who stayed in the dark with us so that we could eventually find our way back to the light. Our sadness is real, but it is not the end of our story because it is being held by hands that were pierced by nails just to show us how much we are worth.
Sometimes people look at those who are suffering and think that maybe they did something wrong or that God is being mean to them. The people in the verse thought that the one who was suffering was being punished by God, but they were wrong about what they saw. It is very easy to look at our own lives when things are going badly and think that we are being punished or that we are being ignored by the heavens. We might see our neighbors having a grand time while we are sitting in a hospital waiting room or crying over a lost job, and we feel like we are the only ones left out in the rain. But the truth is that the suffering we see is actually a sign of how much we are loved and how far God will go to be with us. He chose to be struck down and afflicted so that we could be lifted up and healed. It is the greatest trade that has ever happened in the history of the world. He took the thorns so we could have the flowers. He took the stripes so we could have the peace. We are not being punished; we are being rescued by a love that is deeper than the deepest ocean and higher than the highest star in the sky.
This healing and this carrying are for us today, right in the middle of our messy and complicated lives. We do not have to wait until we are in heaven to feel the relief of laying down our burdens at His feet. We can do it right now while we are reading these words or while we are washing the dishes or while we are driving to work. We can simply say that we are too tired to carry the weight anymore and we can trust that He is already there with His arms open wide. It is a life of surrender where we stop fighting to be our own heroes and we let the true Hero take the lead. We find that when we let go of the heavy things, our hands are finally free to reach out and help someone else who is struggling under their own load. We become people of grace because we have been given so much grace. We become people of hope because we know that the one who carried the cross is the same one who is carrying us through this Tuesday or this Wednesday. We can walk with a lightness in our step because the gravity of our sin and our sadness has lost its power over us. We are free, we are loved, and we are never, ever carrying our heavy things alone.
Prayer for the day.
Dear Father, we come to You with very heavy hearts today because the world feels like it is too much for us to handle on our own. We look at the news and we look at our own problems and we feel like we are drowning in a sea of sadness and worry. Please help us to remember that You have already picked up the heavy things that are making our backs ache. We thank You for being a Savior who is not afraid to get close to our pain and our sickness. We give You our infirmities and the parts of our bodies that do not work the way they should. We give You our minds when they are full of dark thoughts and our hearts when they are breaking into pieces. We ask that You would carry these things for us today so that we can find a rest that is deep and true. Thank You for loving us enough to take our place in the middle of the storm.
We pray for our friends and our family members who are carrying huge burdens of grief right now. We ask that You would let them feel Your strong arms wrapped around them in the quiet moments of their day. Show them that they are not being punished and that You have not forgotten where they are. We want to be people who help carry the loads of others, so please give us the strength and the kindness to be good neighbors. Help us to see the people around us who are hurting and to offer them a hand or a word of comfort. We thank You that because You were afflicted, we can be comforted. We thank You that because You were struck down, we can be raised up. Our hope is not in our own strength but in the wonderful work that You have already finished for us.
As we go through the rest of this day, please keep our eyes on You and not on the mountains of trouble in front of us. Help us to breathe in Your peace and to breathe out all the stress and the fear that we have been holding onto for too long. We surrender our lives and our struggles to Your big and gentle hands. We trust that You are leading us to a place where there will be no more tears and no more pain. But until that day comes, we thank You for being right here in the mess with us. We love You and we thank You for the cross and for the way You carry us every single hour. We are so grateful to be Your children and to know that we are never alone in our suffering. We put all our faith in Your goodness and Your power to make all things new again.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
