The Word
The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me. O Lord, Your loving devotion endures forever— do not abandon the works of Your hands.
- Psalm 138:8Thoughts on Today's Verse
Life can feel like a very long and confusing puzzle where half the pieces are missing. We do not have the picture on the box to show us how it is supposed to look. We wake up and look at our lives and see so many things that are not finished yet. We see dreams that have not come true and hurts that have not healed and mistakes that we keep making over and over again. It is very easy to feel like we have failed or that God has forgotten about us because things are not perfect. But we must remember that a house is not a failure just because the roof is not on yet. We are like a house that is being built by a very wise and loving Father. He knows exactly where every brick goes and He knows how the finished home will look. Even when we feel messy and incomplete, He sees the beauty that is coming. He is not in a hurry like we are. He takes His time because He wants everything to be just right for us. We can breathe a deep sigh of relief because the weight of making our lives perfect is not on our shoulders. It is His job to finish what He started, and He never, ever leaves a job half-done. He is steady and patient with us while we grow.
His love is not like a candle that flickers and goes out when a cold wind blows through the room. It is more like the sun that stays in the sky even when the clouds hide it for a little while. Sometimes we think that if we do something bad, God will stop loving us or He will walk away and find someone better to help. We think His kindness depends on how good we are or how much we pray or how many nice things we say to our neighbors. But the truth is much better than that. His loving devotion lasts forever and it never grows tired or thin. It is a love that stays when we are grumpy and when we are sad and when we are lost. It is a love that does not give up on us when we give up on ourselves. Think about a mother holding her baby; she does not stop loving the baby just because the baby is crying or needs to be cleaned up. God looks at us with even more love than that mother. He chose us before we were even born, and He promised to stay with us until the very end of time. This love is the anchor that keeps our little boat from drifting away into the deep, dark sea of worry. We can trust this love because it has stood the test of time and it has never failed anyone who called out for it. It is the one thing in this whole wide world that we can truly count on to be there when we wake up every single morning.
We are the work of His hands, and a creator never hates the thing He has spent so much time making with His own fingers. Imagine a potter sitting at a wheel with a lump of wet clay. The potter pushes and pulls and shapes the clay into a beautiful jar. Sometimes the clay gets a little lumpy or out of shape, but the potter does not throw it in the trash. He just puts his hands back on the clay and fixes the spots that are broken. We are that clay, and God is the potter who is gently shaping us every single day. He knows our names and He knows our hearts because He is the one who put them inside of us. He will not abandon us because we belong to Him. He has invested so much of himself into our lives that He would never just walk away and let us crumble. When we feel lonely, we can remember that His hands are still on us. When we feel like we are not worth anything, we can remember that the King of the universe is still working on us. He sees value in us that we cannot see in ourselves. He sees a masterpiece where we only see a mess. He will never leave His work unfinished on the table. He will keep working and teaching and loving us until we are exactly who He wants to be.
He has a special plan for us that is bigger than our problems.
We might feel like our lives are just a bunch of random things happening one after another without any real meaning or point to them. We go to work, we eat our meals, we sleep, and we do it all again the next day. It can feel like we are just walking in circles in a big field of tall grass. But God says that He has a purpose for us that is being fulfilled even when we are just doing normal things. Every small act of kindness we do and every time we choose to be patient is part of His big plan. He uses our hard times to make us stronger and He uses our happy times to give us rest. He is weaving a beautiful blanket out of all the different colored threads of our lives. Some threads are dark and some are bright, but they all work together to make something warm and strong. We do not have to know the whole plan to trust the One who made it. We just have to take the next step and trust that He is leading us to a good place. He is the one who opens doors that no one can shut and He is the one who makes a path through the desert. His purpose for us is to be loved by Him and to show that love to the world. That is a wonderful goal that gives us a reason to get out of bed every day. We are part of a grand story that started long ago and will never truly end because His goodness goes on and on. Even when we feel like we are stuck, He is moving things around behind the scenes to help us reach the finish line. We are never stuck when we are in His hands.
Prayer for the day.
Dear God, we come to You today with hearts that sometimes feel very heavy and very tired. We look at our lives and we see so many things that are not finished and so many things that we have messed up. Please help us to stop worrying so much about the future and about being perfect. We want to trust that You are the one in charge of our story. We are so thankful that You promised to finish the work You started in us. Please give us peace as we wait for You to move the pieces of our lives into the right places.
We thank You for Your love that never goes away even when we are not at our best. It is so wonderful to know that we do not have to earn Your kindness. We are so glad that Your devotion to us lasts forever and that nothing we do can ever make You stop loving us. When we feel like we are all alone, please whisper to our hearts and remind us that You are right there. Help us to feel Your gentle hands shaping us and fixing the parts of our hearts that are broken. We surrender our lives to You today because we know that You are the best Potter and we are just the clay.
Please help us to remember that You have a big and beautiful purpose for our lives. When the day feels long and we feel like we are not doing anything important, remind us that we are part of Your plan. We want to shine Your light to everyone we meet today. Thank You for never abandoning us and for always keeping Your promises. We trust You with our whole hearts and we are so happy that we belong to You. We put our hope in Your hands and we believe that the best is still yet to come for us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
