Joel 2:28 Scripture Reflection

Verse of the Day: 17 May 2026

When the world feels dry and our spirits feel like a cracked desert floor, there is a promise of a rain that does not fall from the clouds, but pours out from the very heart of the Creator. We do not have to live on the tiny drops of hope we find on our own, for a day is coming—and is already here—where the youngest and the oldest among us will swim in an ocean of divine breath.

The Word

And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

- Joel 2:28

Thoughts on Today's Verse

Life has a way of draining our energy until we feel like we have nothing left to give to our families, our jobs, or even to ourselves. We wake up and go through the motions, but inside, our hearts feel a little bit hollow and quiet. We look for things to fill us up, like a new hobby or a better vacation, but those things are like drinking salt water when we are actually thirsty for something pure. We were made to be filled with something much bigger than just human happiness. We were made to be the dwelling place of the very Breath of God. When we feel that emptiness, it is actually a beautiful invitation to stop trying so hard and to just open our souls like a cup held out in a rainstorm. We do not have to build a ladder to reach God; He is the one who comes down to fill us up from the inside out. He does not just give us a little bit of help; He pours Himself into us until we are overflowing with a life that we cannot explain.

Imagine a giant, heavy waterfall in the middle of a forest, where the water comes crashing down with so much power that you can feel the ground shaking under your feet. This is how God describes the way He gives us His Spirit. He does not use a tiny eye-dropper to give us one little drop at a time. He uses a giant bucket and He pours and pours until everything is soaked. This Spirit is for "all flesh," which means it is for every single one of us. It does not matter if we have made a lot of mistakes or if we feel like we are not very religious. It is for the person working in the kitchen, the person driving the bus, and the person sitting quietly in the back of the room. God is not picky about who He loves. He wants to be close to us all. When His Spirit touches us, it is like a lightbulb finally being plugged into the wall. Suddenly, there is light where there was only darkness. We start to see things differently. We start to love people we used to find difficult. We find a bravery to speak words of hope that we didn't even know were inside of us.

Our sons and our daughters are part of this big story, and they have a special place in the heart of God.

Sometimes we think that children and teenagers are too young to understand the deep things of faith, or that they have to wait until they are older to hear from God. But God says that they will prophesy, which just means they will speak the truth about how good He is. Think about a child who tells you that everything is going to be okay because God loves you. That child is speaking for God in that moment. We should listen to the young people in our lives because they often see the world with eyes that are still clear and full of wonder. They remind us that the world is a beautiful place and that miracles are still possible. When God pours out His Spirit on them, they become like little lamps in a dark world. They show us that we are never too young to be used by the King of the universe. We should cheer for them and help them grow, knowing that they are carrying a message of hope for the future that we all need to hear.

The older members of our family have a special gift too, because they have walked the long road and have seen many seasons come and go.

It is easy for people who are older to feel like their best days are behind them or that they don't have much left to offer. But God says they will dream dreams. This means that even in the later years of life, there is still something new and exciting waiting around the corner. A dream is a way for God to show us that He is not finished with us yet. Maybe it is a dream of helping a neighbor, or a dream of finally finding peace with an old hurt. When we are older, we have the wisdom of many years, and when we combine that with the Spirit of God, we become a powerful force for good. We can be the ones who tell the stories of how God was faithful through the wars and the hard times. We can be the steady anchors for the younger ones who are just starting their journey. Our dreams are like stars that guide the rest of the family through the night. We are never too old to be surprised by the kindness of our Father. He loves the gray hair and the tired eyes just as much as He loves the young and the strong.

When we see visions, we are seeing the world not as it is, but as God is making it to be.

A vision is like having a special pair of glasses that allows us to see the hidden beauty in a messy situation. We might look at a broken neighborhood and see a vision of a place where kids can play safely again. We might look at a sad friend and see a vision of them laughing and being whole. These visions give us the energy to work for a better world. They keep us from giving up when things look bad on the news. We realize that we are part of a giant plan to bring heaven down to earth, one small act of love at a time. This is what happens when the Spirit is poured out on us; we stop living for just ourselves and we start living for the big, beautiful kingdom of God. We become people of hope in a world of despair. We become people of peace in a world of noise. This promise in the Bible is a promise that we are never alone and that we are being led toward a future that is brighter than anything we can imagine. We can rest today knowing that the rain is falling, the Spirit is moving, and we are being filled with a love that will never run dry. Every person we see today is someone God wants to pour His heart into. We can be the vessels that carry that love to them, sharing the dreams and the visions and the words of life that He has so generously given to us.

Prayer for the day.

Dear God, we come to You today with hearts that are wide open and waiting for You. We confess that we often feel very dry and very tired from trying to handle life on our own. We look at our own strength and we see that it is not enough to get us through the hard days. Please forgive us for the times we have tried to find happiness in things that do not last. We thank You for the wonderful promise that You will pour out Your Spirit on every single one of us. We are standing here like thirsty plants in a dry field, waiting for the rain of Your love to fall on us. Please fill us up until we are overflowing with Your peace, Your joy, and Your kindness. We want to be so full of You that there is no room left for fear or bitterness to grow in our hearts.

We thank You for our children and for the young people in our lives. Please pour Your Spirit on them today so that they can see how much they are loved by You. Give them words of truth to speak to us when we are feeling discouraged. We pray that they would grow up knowing that they are special and that they have a big purpose in this world. We also thank You for the older ones among us who have seen so many years of Your faithfulness. Please give them new dreams to dream and a sense of excitement for the days ahead. Remind them that they are precious to You and that their wisdom is a treasure for all of us. We want to be a family where everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, is walking hand in hand with You. Help us to listen to each other and to see the beauty You have put in every person we meet.

Please give us visions of hope today. When we look at the world and see so much sadness and pain, help us to see the ways You are working to make things right. Give us the courage to be part of Your plan to bring healing and light to our neighborhoods. We surrender our minds and our hearts to You, asking that You would lead us in every step we take. We want to be people who carry Your Spirit everywhere we go, showing Your love through our actions and our words. Thank You for never leaving us empty and for always being the source of our life. We love You because You are so generous and so kind to us every single day. We put our trust in You and we look forward to all the wonderful things You are going to do in our lives and in our world. We are so happy to be Your children and to live in the power of Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
