Verse of the Day: 18 May 2026
The Word
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.
- John 14:27Thoughts on Today's Verse
Sometimes we think that peace is something we will find only when all our bills are paid, or when our bodies feel perfect, or when everyone finally gets along at the dinner table. We chase after a calm feeling like we are trying to catch a butterfly in a big field, but it always seems to fly just a little bit out of our reach. We look at the news or listen to the arguments around us, and we feel a tight knot of worry growing inside our chests. It is very easy to believe that we are responsible for making our own peace by trying to control every little thing that happens to us. But the truth is that we cannot manufacture a quiet heart any more than we can make the sun rise in the middle of the night. True peace is not something we work for; it is a gift that is handed to us by a Friend who knows exactly how tired we really are. He stands in the middle of our messy rooms and our broken plans, and He offers us a rest that does not depend on our circumstances.
The peace that the world tries to give us is very small and it breaks very easily, like a toy made of thin plastic. The world tells us that we will be at peace if we buy a newer car, or if we get a better job, or if we go on a fancy vacation far away from our problems. But as soon as we get those things, we start to worry about losing them, or we find out that they do not actually stop the sad thoughts from coming back. It is a peace that lasts only as long as things are going our way. God’s peace is totally different because it is a part of who He is, and He never changes. Think about a deep ocean during a very big hurricane. On the surface, the waves are giant and the wind is crashing, but if you go deep down under the water, everything is quiet and still and blue. That is the kind of peace we are given. It lives deep inside us, below the surface of our daily struggles. Even when the surface of our life is wavy and wild, we can drop down into that quiet place where God is holding us.
We are told not to let our hearts be troubled, which sounds like a very big job when life feels so heavy and hard.
Imagine a little bird sitting on a branch in the middle of a thunderstorm. The wind is blowing the branch up and down, and the rain is soaking the bird’s feathers, but the bird is not screaming in fear. It is just sitting there, holding on tight with its tiny feet, because it knows that the tree is strong and will not fall down. We are like that little bird, and God is our big, strong tree. When we feel the trouble starting to bubble up in our spirits, we can choose to wrap our hearts around the promises of our Father. We can tell our racing thoughts that they do not have to run anymore. It is like closing a door on a noisy street so that we can finally hear the soft music playing inside our house. We do not have to be brave enough to stop the storm; we just have to be trusting enough to stay in the house. We find that as we focus on His face and His kindness, the things that made us shake start to lose their power over us. We realize that the One who is with us is much bigger than the things that are against us.
Being afraid is something that happens to all of us, and God knows that our hearts are prone to shivering when the lights go out.
He does not get angry with us for feeling scared, and He does not tell us to just grow up and be tough. Instead, He comes close and offers us His own hand to hold. Think about a child who has to walk through a dark hallway to get to the bathroom at night. If they go alone, every shadow looks like a monster. But if their father walks beside them and puts a hand on their shoulder, the shadows are just shadows again. The dark has not gone away, but the fear has because of who is standing there. This is how we face our fears about the future or about our mistakes. We are not walking through the hallway alone. The King of the universe is walking right at our side, and He is not afraid of anything. He has seen the end of the story, and He knows that we are going to be okay. When we remember that we are loved with a love that never ends, the fear starts to melt away like a piece of ice in the warm sun. We can breathe deep and relax our shoulders.
This gift of peace is meant to be used every single minute of our day, from the time we wake up until we close our eyes at night.
It is a peace that helps us be kind to the person who cut us off in traffic. It is a peace that helps us stay calm when we get a report we did not want to hear. We start to live our lives from a place of victory instead of a place of panic. We become people who bring a sense of quiet into every room we walk into. People might look at us and wonder how we can stay so steady when things are so difficult, and we can tell them that it is not our own strength they are seeing. We are just living on a gift that was left for us by a King who loves us. We are part of a kingdom where peace is the law of the land. We do not have to carry the weight of the world because it is already being carried by the One who made it. We can be simple and happy and free. We can trust that today is covered, tomorrow is handled, and we are safe in the arms of the Prince of Peace. There is no trouble too big for His calm, and there is no fear too deep for His love to reach. We can rest now.
Prayer for the day.
Dear God, we come to You today because our hearts feel a little bit like a stormy sea. We have so many worries that keep us awake at night and so many fears that make our hands shake during the day. We confess that we have been trying to find peace in things that do not last and in places that are empty. Please forgive us for not trusting You enough to handle the hard parts of our lives. We thank You so much for the beautiful gift of peace that You have left for us. We do not want the peace that the world gives, because we know it breaks too easily. We want Your peace, the kind that stays steady even when everything is falling apart. Please pour Your quiet spirit into our souls today until we are calm and still.
We thank You that we do not have to be afraid of the future or the shadows in our lives. We are so grateful that You walk beside us through every dark hallway and every scary room. Please help us to keep our eyes fixed on You instead of looking at the giant waves around us. When we feel the trouble starting to grow in our hearts, remind us to breathe in Your love and to breathe out our worry. We give You our families, our health, and our work. we trust that You are watching over every single detail with a kind and powerful eye. Thank You for being our strong tree that we can hold onto when the wind blows hard. We want to be people who carry Your quietness wherever we go today, showing everyone that there is a better way to live.
Help us to rest in the truth that You are in control of all things. We surrender our day to You and we promise to listen for Your soft voice of peace. We love You because You are so good to us and because You never leave us to face the storm alone. Thank You for the comfort of Your presence and for the safety of Your arms. We want to live this day without being troubled or afraid, knowing that we belong to You forever. We praise You for being our Prince of Peace and for the joy that comes from being Your children. We put our trust in Your hands and we believe that You are leading us to a place of rest and happiness. Thank You for loving us more than we can even imagine. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
