Sometimes we carry around a secret sadness that feels like a heavy backpack filled with stones. We walk through our day, maybe sitting at a desk or waiting for a bus, and we feel this tightness in our chests because of things we wish we had not done. We try to hide these feelings, but the burden remains. Yet, we are told that there is a special kind of happiness that comes when our past is wiped away.

Think about the feeling of finally finishing a long, tiring day of cleaning the house. We stand in the quiet kitchen, the dishes are finally done, and the floor is swept. We can breathe again because the mess is gone. This is how it feels when our mistakes are forgiven. We are like someone who has been walking in the rain for hours, shivering and cold, and then we finally step inside a warm home. Our hearts feel light because the things we did wrong are no longer held against us. It is like a clean slate. We do not have to look back at the dirt on the floor or the mud on our shoes. Everything is covered up by grace. We can sit down in peace. We can rest our tired feet. We know that we are safe. This peace is a gift that we receive when we stop trying to hide our flaws. We just let the love of God wrap around us like a warm blanket on a winter night. We are truly blessed when this happens to us.
