Verse of the Day: June 18, 2026
The Word
I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
- John 14:18Thoughts on Today's Verse
We often navigate our lives with a deep, hidden fear that we might eventually be left to face our biggest storms entirely on our own. This feeling of being like an orphan—someone without a home or a protector—is a heavy weight to carry. It stems from our human fragility and the moments in our history where people have let us down or walked away when we needed them the most. Yet, in this moment of promise, we are reminded that our belonging is anchored in something far deeper than human consistency. We are held by a promise that transcends our temporary feelings of isolation and brings us back to the truth that we are known, seen, and sought after by the very Creator of the universe.
When the disciples heard these words, they were sitting in a room thick with the shadows of uncertainty. They were looking ahead at a future where their leader would soon be gone, and they felt the cold grip of panic rising in their chests. They were like students left without a teacher or travelers left without a guide in a strange land. The Greek word used here for coming to them suggests a persistent, active presence that breaks through the barriers of time and space. This is not just a promise of a future return, but a declaration of a covenant that remains unbroken. It speaks to the character of a God who refuses to let us dwell in the darkness of feeling deserted.
Our internal battles often revolve around this very struggle for independence versus the need for a tether. We try to build our own lives, seeking comfort in our accomplishments, our possessions, or the approval of those around us. We fear that if we truly show our weaknesses, the people we rely on will eventually turn away. This leads us to hide our struggles and wear masks of strength that slowly drain our spirit. We become weary from the effort of maintaining our own security. Yet, this verse invites us to stop trying to hold everything together by ourselves. It calls us to acknowledge our deep, inherent need for a shepherd who walks beside us.
Finding peace in this promise requires us to practice a slow, daily surrender of our need to be in total control. It is a process of unlearning the habit of self-reliance that we have built up over years of protecting ourselves from perceived harm. We can start by noticing the times when we feel most alone and, instead of running away or burying those feelings in distractions, choosing to pause and invite the Divine into that space. We can talk about our worries as if we are speaking to a friend who is sitting right next to us, even when the room feels empty. This is how we begin to build a life of trust.
Prayer for the day.
Heavenly Father, we come to You today with hearts that often feel heavy and tired. We carry so many burdens that were never meant to be ours alone to hold. We admit that we have spent so much of our time trying to be strong, trying to prove our worth, and trying to hide the parts of us that feel lonely or lost. We ask that You would help us to lay these heavy things down at Your feet. We want to stop pretending that we can do this life on our own. We need You to be our anchor, our strength, and our constant companion.
We pray for our hearts to be open to the way You are present in our lives right now. We know that we often miss Your presence because we are looking for big, loud signs instead of the quiet, steady ways You show up in our daily routine. Help us to see You in the moments of frustration when things do not go as planned. Help us to hear Your voice when the world around us is noisy and confusing. We pray for our friends and our families, that they too might feel the warmth of Your presence when they are going through hard times.
We surrender our need to control the future, and we ask for the grace to live in the present moment with You. We thank You for the way You pursue us, even when we are running in the opposite direction. We want to live as people who are truly secure, anchored in the truth of Your word and held by the power of Your love. May our lives be a reflection of the peace that comes from knowing You are always near, always listening, and always coming to meet us in our deepest needs. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
