The Word
For the LORD will be our confidence and will keep our foot from the snare.
- Proverbs 3:26Thoughts on Today's Verse
We often wake up feeling a heavy weight of worry about the things we cannot control. We look at the world and see so many ways to trip or fall, and our natural reaction is to try to hold onto everything with our own tired hands. This verse reminds us that we do not have to carry the burden of our own safety or security. We are invited to let go of our reliance on our own plans and instead lean on the character of the One who made the stars and holds the future in His hands.
The wisdom of Proverbs comes from a father teaching his child about the importance of trusting in the Creator rather than in our own cleverness. When this was written, life was full of physical dangers, but the spiritual danger was always the same: the temptation to trust in ourselves instead of the covenant promises of God. The original language points to a deep, unshakable trust that acts as a fortress for our souls. It suggests that when we place our hope in the Lord, He becomes the very foundation of our existence.
Our struggle today often looks like a constant battle between fear and trust. We try to map out our lives with such precision that we miss the beauty of walking by faith. We worry that if we do not constantly monitor our own progress, we will surely fail. This mindset creates a deep spiritual fatigue because we are trying to be our own gods. When we rely on our own confidence, we are easily shaken because our circumstances change every single day. But when we accept that the Lord is our confidence, our stability is no longer tied to how well our day goes.
Imagine we are standing in the middle of a vast, dusty construction site for a new community center that we have spent years planning. The blueprints are spread out on a wooden table, but suddenly, the funding is pulled and the project is halted indefinitely. We stand there in the silence of the afternoon, the only sound being the distant hum of a generator and the dry wind blowing through the metal beams. We feel the weight of our failed planning pressing against our chests, and we look at the unfinished foundation realizing we have no idea how to move forward. In this moment of raw vulnerability, we have to admit to ourselves that our own confidence has completely evaporated.
Finding peace in this truth takes time and practice. It starts with small moments of surrender throughout our day. When we feel that sudden spike of panic because a conversation went wrong or because our bank account is lower than we hoped, we must pause. We take a breath and intentionally whisper that the Lord is our confidence. We imagine our feet being placed on solid ground, guided by a hand that never slips. We practice this by letting go of the need to have the last word in an argument, or by choosing to sleep instead of obsessing over a mistake we made at work.
Prayer for the day.
Heavenly Father, we come to You today with hearts that are often tired and full of worries. We try so hard to be strong and to make everything work out perfectly in our own power. We confess that we often trust in our own plans more than we trust in Your wisdom. Please forgive us for the times we have let fear take the place of our faith in You. We want to stop carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. We want to learn how to rest in the knowledge that You are our true confidence. Help us to see that we do not have to have all the answers for our future. We ask that You would quiet our racing minds and remind us that You are always in control of every step we take. We place our lives into Your loving hands, trusting that You will lead us safely.
Lord, we look at the many things in our lives that make us feel shaky and uncertain. We think about the tasks we have to finish and the relationships that feel strained. We think about the moments when we feel like we are walking through a dark room without a light. We feel the pressure to perform and the fear of making the wrong choice. Please be the light that shows us the way. We ask that You would clear the path of the traps that we cannot see. We know that we are prone to wandering off the path, and we are prone to trusting things that cannot hold us up. We ask that You would keep our feet steady and our hearts focused on Your truth. We want to be people who walk with confidence, not because we are special, but because You are our God and You are faithful to us.
We thank You for being our constant companion through every season of our lives. We thank You for the way You gently guide us even when we are stubborn or afraid. We want to grow in our trust of You, especially when things do not go the way we expected. When we face disappointment, remind us that You are still with us. When we face uncertainty, remind us that You already know the outcome. Help us to be patient with ourselves as we learn to lean on You more each day. We offer You our morning, our afternoon, and our evening. We offer You our work, our rest, and our dreams. We want our lives to be a reflection of Your goodness and Your grace. May we always find our home in Your presence and our security in Your promises. We know that as long as we are walking with You, we are never truly lost, and we are never truly alone. We lean on Your strength when ours is gone, and we find rest in Your love when we are weary. We thank You for the gift of today and for the hope that You give us for all our tomorrows. We walk forward with You, knowing that You are the keeper of our souls and the guardian of our steps. We are so grateful that You chose to be our confidence. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
