Verse of the Day: 26 May 2026
The Word
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched; the flames will not set you ablaze.
- Isaiah 43:2Thoughts on Today's Verse
Our life might look as a deep river that we have to cross without any help. We stand on the edge of the water and feel afraid because the current looks so strong and the path looks so long. We worry that our feet will slip on the wet stones and the cold water will pull us under where no one can see us. It is okay to feel this fear because the world is a big place and we are very small people. Sometimes we lose our jobs or we lose our friends and it feels like the water is rising up to our necks. We might cry in the middle of the night because we do not know how to stay afloat. But the truth is that we do not have to be strong enough to swim on our own. There is a presence that stays right beside us in every single wave. We are held by a love that does not let go when the water gets deep. This love is like a life jacket that keeps our heads above the surface even when we are too tired to move our arms. We can breathe because we are not alone in the middle of the river.
The fire of our troubles can feel so hot that we think we will be turned to ash. We face hard times that feel like walking through a furnace where the heat makes it hard to take a breath. Maybe we are dealing with a sickness that will not go away or a sadness that feels like a heavy weight on our chests. We look at the flames and think that everything good in our lives is going to melt away. It is very scary to be in the middle of a fire. But this promise tells us that the heat will not destroy us. We might feel the warmth and we might see the smoke, but our hearts are safe. It is like when a child is scared of a dark room and a parent comes in to sit on the bed until the morning light comes. The fire is real, but the protection is even more real. We are guarded by a peace that passes our understanding. Even when the world feels like it is burning down around us, our souls remain safe and whole.
We are never forgotten.
The rivers of life try to sweep us away into the deep and quiet places where we feel lost and small. We look at our bank accounts and see they are empty, or we look at our broken hearts and see they are tired. We think the water will win. We think the river is bigger than the hand that made the stars. But the water is just water. It cannot wash away the mark that is on our lives. We belong to someone who knows every drop of rain and every grain of sand. When we feel like we are drowning in chores or drowning in bills or drowning in worry, we can remember that we are being carried. It is like a father carrying a tired toddler up the stairs at the end of a long day. We do not have to walk if we are too weak. We do not have to fight the current with our own strength. We just have to rest in the arms that are holding us up. The river can be loud and fast, but it is not our master. We are safe because we are loved.
There is a deep and beautiful mystery in how we can walk through the worst days of our lives and still find a reason to smile at a bird singing or a flower growing in the dirt. We go through the fire and we come out on the other side without the smell of smoke on our clothes because we were protected by a grace that is bigger than any pain. This grace is like a cool breeze on a summer day that makes the heat feel less heavy. We see people who have lost everything but still have a light in their eyes, and we wonder how that can be true. It is true because the fire does not own us. The trouble does not define who we are. We are defined by the one who walks in the furnace with us. It is like the story of the three friends who were thrown into a giant fire but did not get hurt because a fourth person was there with them. We have that same fourth person with us today. Whether we are at school or at work or sitting in a hospital room, that same presence is right there. We can feel the heat, but we will not be burned. We can see the flames, but we will not be consumed. We are kept by a power that is stronger than any disaster. We are watched over by eyes that never sleep. We are cared for by a heart that never grows cold. This is our hope and our shield. This is the reason we can keep going even when we want to give up. We are precious and we are protected. Every step we take is a step taken in the company of a friend who will never leave us behind. We are walking toward a place of peace. We are moving through the fire to get to the gold. The journey is hard, but the company is perfect. We are never, ever truly alone in our suffering.
Prayer for the day.
Dear Father, we come to You because we are tired and the water is getting very high around us today. We feel the spray of the waves on our faces and we are scared that we will not be able to keep our footing on the slippery ground. Please hold our hands very tight so that we do not fall down in the mud of our worries. We give You our fear and our shaking knees because we know that You are stronger than the storm. Help us to feel Your presence right next to us as we walk through these hard times. We need to know that You are there when the room is quiet and our thoughts are loud. We thank You for being the one who never leaves us even when we are not acting our best.
We see the fire in front of us and the heat makes us want to run away and hide. There are problems in our families and struggles in our hearts that feel like they are going to burn us up until there is nothing left. We ask You to be our shield and our cool water in the middle of the heat. Please keep our hearts from being scorched by anger or by bitterness when life is unfair. We trust that You are walking in the flames with us just like You promised in Your word. We are not brave on our own, but we are brave because You are with us. Help us to see the way out of the fire and into the place of rest that You have ready for us. We lift up our friends and our neighbors who are also feeling the heat right now.
Thank You for being a God who comes down into the river and into the fire to be with us instead of just watching from far away. We are so grateful that we do not have to be perfect to be protected by Your great love. We surrender our day to You and we put our lives into Your big, kind hands. We know that the water will not overwhelm us because You are the master of the sea. We know the fire will not consume us because You are the creator of the light. We breathe in Your peace and we let go of our stress. We believe that we will come out on the other side of this trouble with a story of how good You have been to us. We love You and we need You every single second of this day.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
