The Word
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
- Matthew 5:4Thoughts on Today's Verse
Our hearts often carry heavy weights that no one else can see. We might feel as though our tears are falling into an empty space where no one notices or cares.
Loss feels like a giant hole that nothing can fill. We lose people we love, or we lose dreams we held close for many years. Sometimes we just feel sad because the world is broken and full of pain. It is okay to cry when things hurt. Crying is not a sign that we are weak or that we lack faith. It is actually a way for us to show that our hearts are still soft. A soft heart is a heart that God can hold. When we mourn, we are being honest about how much we hurt. We are not pretending that everything is fine when it is clearly not. God sees every single tear that rolls down our faces. He does not look away when we are sad. He stays close. He sits with us in the dark. He listens to the sound of our heavy breathing. He knows the names of the people we miss. He knows the reasons why we feel lonely even in a crowded room. We do not have to hide our sadness from Him. We can bring our broken pieces and lay them on the floor. He is a gentle Father who knows how to handle things that are fragile.
Pain is real.
When a small child falls and scrapes a knee, they run to someone who loves them. They do not want a long speech about why they fell or how to walk better next time. They just want to be held until the stinging stops. This is how God treats us when our souls are scraped and bleeding. He offers us a comfort that is much deeper than just feeling better for a little while. This comfort is like a warm blanket on a cold night or a hand to hold when we have to walk through a scary place. It is a quiet peace that tells us we are going to be okay even if things are hard right now. We see this when a friend brings us a warm meal when we are too sad to cook. We see it when someone sits in silence with us just so we do not have to be alone. These small moments are ways that God shows us His love. He uses the hands and hearts of others to wrap us in His care. He also speaks to our hearts in the quiet moments of the morning. He reminds us that the morning will come even after the longest night. We can trust that His comfort is always on the way to find us.
We find strength in being honest about our grief because it allows us to receive the help we truly need. If we always act like we are strong, we might miss the chance to feel the arms of our Creator around us. There is a special kind of blessing found in the middle of our sorrow that people who never mourn might never understand. It is the blessing of knowing that we are never truly abandoned or forgotten by the one who made us. When we see a bird with a broken wing, we feel a deep desire to help it heal. God feels that same desire for us but with a love that is much bigger and more powerful than anything we can imagine. He is the master of fixing things that are shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. He does not rush us through our healing process. He lets us take as much time as we need to feel whole again. He walks at our pace, never pushing us to go faster than our tired legs can carry us. This slow and steady love is what keeps us going when we feel like giving up on everything. We can breathe deeply knowing that we are loved in our mess.
He stays.
The world tells us to be happy all the time and to keep a smile on our faces no matter what. It says that sadness is something to be fixed as quickly as possible so we can get back to work. But the words we read today tell a very different story about what it means to be truly blessed. To be blessed means that we have God on our side during the hardest parts of our lives. It means that our sorrow is the very thing that draws Him closer to us than ever before. Think about a mother who hears her baby cry in the middle of the night. She does not get angry or tell the baby to stop being sad. She gets out of bed and goes to the child because the cry is a call for her presence. Our mourning is like that cry to God. It is a signal that we need Him, and He always answers that signal with His kindness. We might still feel the sting of loss, but we no longer feel the sting of being alone. We have a companion who has walked through deep sorrow Himself. He knows what it feels like to lose a friend and to feel the weight of the world. Because He knows, He can truly help us carry our own heavy burdens. We find rest in the fact that He is strong enough to carry us and our grief at the same time. This is the promise that gives us a reason to keep moving forward even when the path is covered in shadows.
Prayer for the day.
Father, we come to you today with hearts that are heavy and tired. We feel the weight of our losses and the pain of things that have gone wrong in our lives. We thank you that you do not ask us to hide our tears from you. We thank you for being a God who stays close to the brokenhearted. Please wrap your arms around us as we mourn today. Let us feel your peace in the middle of our storms. Give us the comfort that only you can provide. Help us to trust that you are working even when we cannot see the way out.
We ask you to help us be kind to ourselves when we feel sad. Remind us that it is okay to take a breath and rest in your love. We bring you our loneliness, our confusion, and our deep hurts. We lay them at your feet and ask for your healing touch. Use our friends and our family to show us your grace today. Let a kind word or a simple hug remind us that we are not alone in this world. We need your strength because our own strength is gone. We need your light because the darkness feels very thick around us right now. Thank you for listening to every word we say and even the sighs we cannot put into words.
Please help us to see the small blessings you put in our path today. Even in our sadness, show us the beauty of a flower or the warmth of the sun. Help us to believe that better days are coming because you are faithful. We choose to put our hope in you instead of our circumstances. We trust that you will dry every tear and heal every wound in your perfect time. We surrender our lives to you and ask for your guidance in every step we take. Keep us close to your heart today and every day. We love you and we need you more than anything else in this life.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
