Verse of the Day: 23 May 2026
The Word
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.
- James 1:17Thoughts on Today's Verse
When we look up at the shifting clouds and feel the cold wind of change rattling the windows of our souls, there is a steady sun that never sets and a hand that never wavers. We do not have to live in fear of a God who changes His mind or a love that has a shadow, for we are held by the One who is the source of every good thing we have ever known.
We wake up and find that the weather has changed, or our feelings have changed, or the people we love are acting differently than they did yesterday. It can be very scary to live in a world that feels like it is made of shifting sand. We worry that if we make a mistake, the good things in our lives will be taken away from us like a toy being taken from a child. We think that maybe God is like a person who is sometimes in a good mood and sometimes in a bad mood. We wonder if today is a day where He is happy with us or a day where He is hiding behind a dark cloud of anger. This makes our hearts feel very unsteady and tired. But the truth is that God is the only thing in the whole universe that never, ever changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is like a giant, solid mountain that stays in the same place even when the trees around it grow and die and the snow comes and goes. We can lean our whole lives against Him and know that He is not going to move or disappear.
Everything good that has ever happened to us is a special present that was dropped into our lives by our Father in heaven.
Think about the simple things that make us smile...
Think about the simple things that make us smile, like a warm cup of coffee in the morning, the sound of a baby laughing, or the way the sun feels on our skin after a long winter. We might think these are just normal parts of life, but they are actually small love letters from God to us. He is the Father of the heavenly lights, which means He is the one who made the sun, the moon, and all the billions of stars that twinkle in the night sky. He is the King of all light and beauty. When we see something beautiful, we are seeing a tiny bit of His heart. He loves to give us gifts that are perfect for us. He knows exactly what we need before we even ask Him. He does not give us things that will hurt us, and He does not give us gifts just to take them back later to be mean. He is a generous Giver who finds so much joy in seeing us happy and safe. Every time we find a little bit of hope or a little bit of peace, we can look up and say thank you because we know exactly where it came from.
A shadow is a strange thing because it is always moving and changing shape based on how the sun is hitting it.
If you stand outside and watch your shadow, you will see it grow long in the morning and get very short at noon. It is never the same for more than a minute. The Bible tells us that God is not like a shifting shadow. He does not have a dark side. He does not have a part of Him that is hidden or scary. He is all light, all the time. This means that we never have to guess what He is thinking about us. He has told us that He loves us, and because He does not change, that love is just as strong today as it was the day He made the world. It is a very big relief to know that we do not have to perform or be perfect to keep His light shining on us. He does not turn His back on us when we are messy or when we are having a hard time believing in Him. He stays steady. He stays kind. He stays right where He promised He would be. We are the ones who move around and get lost, but He is like a lighthouse that stays bright so we can always find our way back home to the shore.
We can look at all the "good and perfect" things in our lives as proof that we are never forgotten by the One who lives above the stars.
Sometimes we have hard days where it feels like everything is going wrong and there are no gifts to be found anywhere. We might be sick, or we might be lonely, or we might be worried about how we are going to pay for our food. In those dark moments, it is hard to see the light. But even then, God is still giving us perfect gifts that we might not see with our eyes. He gives us the gift of breath. He gives us the gift of His presence. He gives us the gift of a hope that says this hard time will not last forever. He is working behind the scenes to turn our messy lives into something beautiful. Just like a master baker uses flour and salt and eggs to make a delicious cake, God uses all the different parts of our lives to make something wonderful. We can trust His hands because His hands are the ones that made the light. We are part of a family where the Father is always looking out for us, always providing for us, and always loving us with a heart that never grows cold or tired.
Knowing that God never changes gives us a quiet bravery that the world cannot understand or take away from us.
We can face the big changes in our lives, like moving to a new house or getting older, because we are holding onto the hand of the One who stays the same. We do not have to be afraid of the future because the future is just another place where God’s light is already shining. We can be people who are steady and kind to others because we have a steady and kind Father. We find that as we focus on His light, the shadows in our own lives start to get smaller. We become more like Him. We start to give good things to the people around us without expecting anything back. Our lives become a reflection of the heavenly lights. We can rest our heads on our pillows tonight and sleep like a baby because the King of the universe is watching over us, and He is not going to change His mind about loving us while we are asleep. We are safe in His light, we are rich in His gifts, and we are held by a love that is more solid than the earth beneath our feet. We can breathe deep and be happy today because every good thing we have is a sign that we are cherished and seen by the Creator of all things.
Prayer for the day.
Dear God, we come to You today with hearts that are full of thanks for all the good things You have tucked into our lives. We confess that we often forget to look up and see that every smile, every bite of food, and every breath of air is a gift from Your kind hands. We get so distracted by the things that are changing and the things that are breaking that we forget to look at the One who never changes. Please forgive us for the times we have been afraid that You would stop loving us or that You would take away Your mercy. We thank You so much for being a steady rock in a world that feels like shifting sand. We are so glad that You are the Father of lights and that there is no shadow in You at all. Help us to feel Your warmth on our faces today, even when we are going through a cloudy or dark season of life.
We ask You to help us trust Your perfect timing and Your perfect gifts. Sometimes we want things that are not good for us, or we want things right now instead of waiting for Your best. Please give us a patient heart that knows You only give what is good and perfect for Your children. We give You our worries about the changes happening in our families, our jobs, and our world. We trust that because You are the same today as You were yesterday, You will continue to be faithful to us tomorrow. Please open our eyes to see the tiny miracles that are happening all around us every single hour. We want to be people who are always saying thank you for Your generosity. Thank You for being a Father who loves to surprise us with Your kindness and who never gets tired of taking care of us. We want to live our lives in the bright light of Your love, showing Your beauty to everyone we meet.
Please guide us today and keep us close to Your side. We want to be more like You—steady, kind, and full of light. When we feel like we are walking through a valley of shadows, remind us that the Sun of Righteousness is still shining and that You haven't moved an inch. We surrender our day, our plans, and our future to Your hands. We love You because You are so good and because Your love for us is the one thing in this world that we can always count on. Thank You for the gift of Your Spirit and for the promise of Your home. We are so happy to be Your children and to live under Your watchful and caring eye. We put our trust in Your promises and we believe that You are working everything out for our good, just like You have always done. We love You more than words can say.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
